Scouts in Troop 17’s STEM program had a great visit to the National Air and Space Museum on April 11, 2015 in fulfillment of a requirement for the “Shoot” STEM/Nova award. We focused on the Apollo program and how the United States was able to successfully send men to the moon in only eight years after President Kennedy rallied the nation around this ambitious goal.
Scouts saw the real Apollo 11 command module and even got to touch a real moon rock! We also saw many other historical airplanes and spacecraft, including the Spirit of St. Louis and the Wright Brothers Flyer, and we learned how airplanes fly with numerous hands-on exhibits and simulators. We also saw the 3D IMAX movie “Journey Into Space” which described how NASA hopes to land humans on Mars in the 2030’s.
