Troop 17 is active with regular monthly events, including camping, rock climbing, biking, canoeing, backpacking and more while accommodating the needs of today’s busy families. We also perform service projects such as installing new stations of the cross plaques on a trail at Church of the Incarnation, baking pies for a local homeless shelter, and helping with Eagle service projects. Our goal is to have fun while working on advancements and cheerfully serving local churches, schools and charities. The troop strives to meet the needs of new Scouts just starting out, while also keeping the older Scouts engaged and progressing toward the goal of Eagle.
We attend summer camp at Camp Shenandoah, participate in district camporees such as Apple Harvest, Klondike Derby, and the Moose Camporee, and we participate in the U-Scout Merit Badge University at UVA. We participate in numerous outings and day events, including helping with the 2013 presidential inauguration, attending the Oceana Naval Air Station airshow, and attending the US Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon exhibition and performance at the Marine Barracks in Washington DC.
Over the past three summers, Troop 17 has also gone to all three BSA high adventure camps: Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys, and Northern Tier in Minnesota.
Troop 17 also competes in the Team America Rocketry Chellenge, an international model rocketry STEM competition. And Troop 17 offers the new BSA STEM/Nova program as an ongoing optional STEM-focused program.
