Troop 17 went to Summer Camp during the first week at Camp Shenandoah in Swoope,VA. Most Scouts participated in the Timber Mountain first year program, concentrating on fun while learning Scouting fundamentals, skills, and rank advancements. Troop 17 got to lead one of the evening flag ceremonies, and once again earned Honor Troop. It was another great summer camp at Camp Shenandoah!
Troop 17 STEM program participants built trebuchets as part of the “Shoot!” STEM/Nova award. Scouts learned how trebuchets work, gained skills building their trebuchet, and then had a target shooting competition where they learned how to adjust their trebuchet so they could use the principles of projectile motion to hit a target.
In fulfillment of another requirement for “Shoot!” the boys also built calibrated projectile launchers and took experimental data that allowed them to analyze and explain the relationship between force, angle and distance traveled of a projectile. We also earned the Space Exploration merit badge in fulfillment of “Shoot!” requirements, including the building and launching of model rockets.
“Shoot!” was a very hands-on STEM badge that gave the Scouts many real-world opportunities to build, experiment, analyze and explain how projectile motion works.
